Discover the Art of Sustainable Candle Making with Thalassa Candles

Handcrafted with care, each Thalassa Candle brings a touch of eco-friendly elegance to your home.

Thalassa Candles was founded by Jenny Mattmann-Pang out of a desire to create a product that aligns with her values of sustainability and wellness. Dissatisfied with the harmful paraffin wax commonly used in candles, Jenny sought to develop an alternative that was both eco-friendly and beautiful.

The name “Thalassa,” meaning “sea” in Greek, embodies the purity and tranquility that Jenny aims to deliver through her handcrafted candles. Each one is made with natural waxes like soy and coconut soy, ensuring a clean, non-toxic burn that’s safer for your home and the environment.

Crafting with Purpose and Passion

The process of creating Thalassa Candles is a labour of love, combining artistry with a commitment to sustainability. Jenny begins by handcrafting each vessel from hydrostone, a versatile material mixed with water and poured into silicone moulds. After setting for about 30 minutes, the vessels are carefully demoulded and left to dry for a week. To ensure durability and a smooth finish, Jenny applies three coats of a non-toxic, water-based sealer, followed by an additional three-day drying period.

The candle-making process is just as meticulous. Natural wax is melted to precise temperatures to ensure a perfect blend with non-toxic fragrance oils, enhancing both the burn quality and scent throw. Each candle features a wood wick, chosen not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for the cosy, crackling sound it creates when lit. After pouring the wax into the sealed vessels, the candles are left to cure for three weeks, allowing the fragrance to develop fully and ensuring the best possible burn experience.

From Market Debut to Growing Success

Thalassa Candles made its debut at a local market, where the response was overwhelmingly positive. Jenny recalls the mix of excitement and nerves she felt on that first day, but the enthusiastic reception from customers quickly confirmed that her dedication to creating eco-friendly, handcrafted candles had struck a chord. This early success has been a driving force behind Jenny’s continued efforts to grow Thalassa Candles, expanding both her product range and her reach.

Balancing Passion with Life’s Responsibilities

Running Thalassa Candles is a part-time endeavour for Jenny, who juggles her time between her work as a bookkeeper and caring for her children. Despite these challenges, Jenny remains passionate about her business, finding time to nurture her brand whenever she can. With limited resources for advertising, she relies heavily on organic reach and word-of-mouth, focusing on creating a strong online presence and engaging with her customers through social media.

Looking to the Future

Jenny has big plans for the future of Thalassa Candles. She aims to establish the brand as a go-to choice for those seeking sustainable, non-toxic candles. In addition to expanding her online presence, Jenny is exploring new products, scents, and designs that align with her eco-friendly values. She’s also keen to build a strong, engaged community around her brand, connecting with customers both online and at events like the Perth Makers Market.
