From Modena to Perth
From his first eye-opening, heart-expanding taste as a young boy, Joe knew there was a unique joy that only gelato can bring. He began working at a gelato shop in a small town near Modena, serving customers late into the night. He worked his way up, taking the reins managing a team of four to make delicious, authentic gelato.
Led by a restless spirit and desire to chase the sun, Joe found himself on the luminous shores of WA. For many years he poured his passion and precision into an established and well-loved local business, until the time came to embark on his own adventure – Cono Gelato.
Incredible Clean Gelato
Cono Gelato serves nostalgia and joy, combining traditional and non-traditional flavours for everyone! They care about the quality of their ingredients, importing some from specialist pockets of Italy and sourcing others as close to home as possible.
This is an ode to Joe’s home country of Italy and a ‘thank you’ to his adoptive country of Australia. Joe gives back with flavour, fun and care — producing a delicious product that is sensitive to both planet and palate.
Cono Gelato is a clean label. What does clean label mean? It means that they use products with no additives, and emulsifiers using vegetable fibers as replacement.
Cono Gelato works with WA locals to find similar products onshore such as fruit from small suppliers. They use seasonal fruit that will give them the opportunity to make gelato with the fruit at its best. There is a massive difference between using strawberries in spring or summer instead of winter and that is just one example!
Their milk comes from a small farm near Perth and comes in reusable glass containers or bottles.
If you’re more of a cup person than a cone person, then never fear, there are no nasties their cups either. Cono Gelato uses bamboo cups. Bamboo is a sustainable and renewable material that does not require pesticides to manufacture. It is also fully biodegradable in landfill — bueno!
The weekend is where the Gelato comes to life!
At the moment Joe does not work full time on this business, and works mainly at the weekend events with his gelato cart, serving people at farmers markets, private events and Perth Makers Markets of course!
From Big to Small
Joe started Cono Gelato in January and immediately had to face the struggle associated with COVID-19, with many big events cancelled and some others that did not turn out as expected. It was a hard start, but they then tried different solutions such as smaller events!
Future Goals
At the moment Joe operates Cono Gelato by serving their products from a gelato cart and in the future, he would like to open a shop and go wholesale as well!
At Perth Makers Market!
Sunday the 17th of April will be their first time at Perth Makers Market and they are very excited to be a part of it!
