Meet Windermere Designs!

Linda Jacobsen-Willett is the creative and maker behind Windermere Designs.

Linda creates a fabulous array of Overlays, Jackets, Belts and many other glorious items driven by her love of fabric.

The name Windermere Designs came from our house Windermere, which originated from a station that was located in North-West Queensland, owned by my Husband's Great-Grandparents.

I have a huge love of fabric! In fact, sometimes I think the hobby is really two different things - buying the fabric and then later deciding what to do with it! I have joined a couple of Facebook groups and I'm constantly thrilled to see other peoples’ work and ideas. It is often a joke in our family that at 15 years of age I failed what we called 'home science', which included sewing and cooking. Who would have thought that I would grow to love both?!

I started Windermere Designs in 2009 by making 'overlays'. These were designed to dress up the trousers or skirts that many women wear. My designs varied over time and were comprised of a panel of fabric attached to a band with ties that tied around the waist and were made to fit most sizes. Often the fabrics were similar to kimono fabric or plain black panels with a feature piece. These were a popular item for a few year's before demand slowed down.

At my very first market I didn't sell anything. Needless to say, it didn't deter me! I believe if you enjoy making something for someone else you are making a contribution by bringing pleasure to others.

When my youngest daughter Elsie was 8 (she is now 26), she liked to be organised with everything in its place. So for a trip to Broome, I made a children's organiser for the back seat of the car. It had four pockets and suited her very well. A few years passed and along came our grandchildren, who I also made the organisers for. It was then suggested that I make these to sell at Markets, which turned out to be a very popular idea. My current design includes a space for tablets and iPads as well.

Sometimes I feel  that what I like is often a little different than what you find in the shops, so I try to create items that I would like to wear myself. I've advanced from the overlays to sleeveless reversible jackets designed in fun, vibrant fabrics. I also have some cocoon jackets with some made in silk, others in chiffon. These are used to jazz up an outfit similar to how we use a scarf.

We were lucky enough to visit Italy last year and I found a 'poncho or caplet' that I instantly fell in love with and purchased for myself. Of course once we were back and settled I made some caplets to sell. Luckily for me there have been several other people who liked them as well.

My fashion items are mostly unique in that I only make one or two of each fabric and where I have used a piece of fabric twice, it will always have a different contrast. This keeps with the slogan 'uniquely hand-made in WA'.

My work is conducted from a room in my home that has been converted to a sewing room. I'm not sure where I would like my business to go, I still think of it as my dream hobby. I have been lucky enough to take my designs to the Markets. I've learnt to become very discerning with my choice of markets and so far I've thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Perth Maker's Market.

I enjoy what I do and have at times ventured into felting, but I am hoping that when I eventually retire (not sure when that will be), I will take that up again. Perhaps I'll venture into children's clothing as well. Sewing is ever evolving!
